Tilda Swinton shines as the narrotologist Alithea in Cannes, albeit not in the official competition, as she did last year in Apitchatpong Weerasethakul’s meditative drama Memoria, a description of the state of our world today. The main obstacle for the two films’ main characters is the same: in Memoria, Tilda Swinton tries to solve the mystery behind a strange noise, and in Three Thousand Years of Longings, she has a psychological exchange with a jinn.
Both figures are as unconventional in their form as Tilda Swinton portrays them with a dash of tragic humour. Unfortunately, Swinton makes unnecessary comments from the start. This appears to be completely unnecessary, as the viewer can infer everything necessary about Alithea simply by her presence and subtle facial expressions.
