Julia’s plan to give Mr. Malcolm what he deserves begins with Selina’s arrival. (She also manages to persuade Cassidy to join her.) By the time Selina pulls up to Julia’s palatial London mansion, she’s off to work, training to be Mr. Malcolm’s dream woman.
Mr. Malcolm’s Lists takes his time immersing himself in his story. There’s a lot of setup, from flashbacks to establishing Julia and Selina’s relationship at school to setting the London marriage market in context. The nearly two-hour film has a smooth, familiar cadence once the pieces are in place. The recent saturation of regency and golden age visual content means that viewers will be primed for Mr. Malcolm’s List’s aesthetic motifs: corset dresses, large feathered hats, elaborate wallpaper ballrooms, and sweeping music that transports us from one scene to the next.
