What immediately catches the eye in Love Hard is the repetition of clichés already explored in the most famous romantic comedies. The most obvious stereotype is the protagonist’s job: Natalie is a journalist. Likewise, so were Harry’s Sally , Meet Sally , Bridget from Bridget Jones’s Diary and Iris (Kate Winslet) from Love Does n’t Go on Vacation ; just to name a few. What they have in common is also the terrible misfortune in the sentimental relationships with which they are presented to the viewer bad luck that often vent in writing.
But not only that: as happens in many romantic comedies, even in Love Hard we find side characters whose only function is to support the protagonist, enriching the screenplay with witty punch lines . In this case, however, the successful moments are very few. In addition, once again the inevitable love triangle returns: in Jiménez’s film the dynamic between the three characters is rather weak and the resolution predictable, culminating in a lazy ending that takes too much inspiration from the much more iconic Love Actually.
