GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE has a glassy film photo, the environments are glassy too, and the colors are bright. But what good is it if it feels like a movie made by some fifteen year olds with way too much money.
In many ways, this is a rip-off of JOHN WICK . Maybe a bit of a parody of JOHN WICK. The film takes place in a literally colorful world, where there are large establishments for professional killers. All participants, regardless of profession, appear to be involved in criminal organizations. You can also draw parallels to LÉON and KILL BILL.
When it was time for the film’s first major fight scene, I backed off in amazement. What the hell is this ?! I stammered. Sam is in a bowling alley, where she is to fight against three men with the help of a bag with money as shelter. Not only is this action scene remarkably poorly choreographed – it’s obvious Karen Gillan can’t fight. At all! It’s the same in all action scenes where she will kung fu the opponents. It’s incomparably awkward. In films like THE BOURNE IDENTITY and TAKEN, they solved the problem with quick clips and close-ups, then it does not appear that Liam Neeson and the others are not martial artists.
